LONDON, ENGLAND (19 SEPT, 2016) – Nationals and friends of the Federation descended on the St. Kitts and Nevis High Commission in London on Independence Day to celebrate another milestone in the Federation`s journey of nation building. High Commissioner Dr Kevin Isaac and staff of the High Commission welcomed fellow compatriots from across the UK, including Leeds, Manchester, Luton, Birmingham and London. The gathering was an opportunity for nationals – old and young – to rekindle their love of country and the ideals of independence, all while reacquainting themselves with friends and family.

High Commissioner Kevin Isaac capitalised on the opportunity to give an overview of the major achievements the Federation has made since attaining independence. He referenced the shift from the storied sugar industry to a retooled service oriented economy based on high end tourism and lifestyle. He further underscored the evident rise out of poverty that a large number of citizens were able to witness and enjoy throughout the years – as a result of both sectors. In his remarks, the High Commissioner reminded guests of the strategic vision of the Government in pursuing a people empowerment agenda.

The sense of pride felt at the celebratory event was captured by High Commissioner Isaac’s words when he proclaimed to citizens that, « while St. Kitts and Nevis may be small in size, it should never be said that we are small in pride and ambition ». He further emphasized that Kittitians and Nevisians should be « proud of what they have built and are building – all guided by the theme of independence celebrations of promoting prosperity through sustainability and national unity.»

An update was also provided to nationals on the new investments that are being made to propel the next thirty years of growth and development. Particular mention was made of pledged investments in education and healthcare, two areas of importance for those in the diaspora who have contributed immensely to the advancement of the healthcare infrastructure over the years.

The reception at the High Commission was preceded by a traditional Evensong Service at Westmister Abbey where prayers were offered for the government and people of the Federation.
