PRIME MINISTER HARRIS SPEAKS AT CLINTON GLOBAL INITIATIVE EVENT ON THE FRINGES OF THE 71ST SESSION OF THE U.N. GENERAL ASSEMBLY

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, SEPTEMBER 21ST, 2016 (PRESS SEC) – Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris was a featured participant in a small group discussion organized by the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) as part of the three-day CGI 2016 Annual Meeting in New York City. The small group discussion titled Combating Teen Pregnancy, Cervical Cancer, and HIV in Caribbean Girls and Women was held from 2:00pm to 3:30pm today, Wednesday, September 21st, the final day of the CGI 2016 Annual Meeting.

Prime Minister Harris serves as the Caribbean Community’s (CARICOM’s) Lead Head on Human Resources, Health and HIV/AIDS.

The other speakers were Her Excellency Sandra Granger, Guyana’s First Lady; Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade; Babatunde Osotimehin, Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund, and the Right Honourable Patricia Scotland QC, the Commonwealth Secretary-General. The chairperson was Dr. Edward Greene, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean.

A description of the small group discussion on www.clintonfoundation.org reads: “In this session, CGI members will: 

• Discuss how to support CGI commitment-makers working on girls’ and women’s health in the Caribbean through financial resources and supplies, commodities, and pharmaceuticals. 
• Explore technical expertise that can benefit government, policy, pilot implementation, and scaling across the Caribbean. 
• Examine culturally relevant media and communications strategies, which are important vehicles for educating parents and young people about the benefits of both prevention and care seeking.”

Prime Minister Harris is presently at the closing ceremony of the 2016 Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting.

Dr. Harris leads a delegation to the 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly at the U.N. Headquarters in New York City. The St. Kitts and Nevis delegation includes the Honourable Mark Brantley, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Aviation; His Excellency Sam Condor, St. Kitts and Nevis’ Ambassador to the United Nations; Mr. Osbert DeSuza, Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, and Mrs. Ghislaine Williams-Clarke, chargé d’affaires at the Permanent Mission of St. Kitts and Nevis to the United Nations.

The Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis is scheduled as the sixth speaker (between 9:00am and 10:30am) during the General Debate at the U.N. Headquarters on Saturday, September 24th.
