POST- CABINET BRIEFING FOR FRIDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2016

Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 31, 2016 (SKNIS): The formal meeting of the Cabinet took place on Friday, October 28, 2016. The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris. The Cabinet discussed a number of matters and made the following decisions:

1. Cabinet granted concessions to a number of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Information Communications Technology (ICT) sector and other fields.

2. Cabinet considered a proposal from a broad-based committee drawn from public and private sectors including service providers and legal fraternity on the criteria for fractionals to be considered approved projects under the Citizenship-by-Investment (CBI) Programme. Cabinet will engage the committee further on its proposals.

3. Cabinet established an inter-ministerial committee comprising the Ministries of Tourism, Public Infrastructure, Labour, National Security, Office of the Attorney General, to review matters pertaining to the orderly management of Port Zante and issues relating to vending.

4. Cabinet approved the recommendations for Mrs. Louise Venetta Tannock to serve as St. Kitts and Nevis’ honorary consul in Bermuda.

5. Cabinet discussed issues relating to the safety and security of the country and in that regard undertook for a subcommittee of the Cabinet to meet with the High Command of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force and the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force on Saturday, October 30, 2016. In that regard, Cabinet approved expediting the installation of closed circuit television (CCTV) in the Basseterre area.

6. Cabinet also expressed its support for the reinstituting of Police Week which was started on Saturday, October 29 with the Health Walk. Cabinet noted that there had been a sixteen year absence without the celebrating of Police Week. The honourable prime minister was scheduled to declare Police Week 2016 open on Saturday, October 29, 2016.

7. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honourable Mark Brantley, reported to Cabinet on the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) meeting, which he attended in the Dominican Republic. ECLAC is a United Nations regional commission to encourage economic cooperation. ECLAC includes 45 member states, 20 in Latin America, 13 in the Caribbean, and 12 from outside the region, and 13 associate members, which are various non-independent territories, associated island countries and a commonwealth in the Caribbean. ECLAC publishes statistics covering the countries of the region and makes cooperative agreements with non-profit institutions. ECLAC’s headquarters is in Santiago, Chile.
