Currently, construction work is ongoing on the new Tabernacle Health Centre following its official ground blessing ceremony in January. Work is also continuing on the Coast Guard Unit base at Bird Rock, and now employees of the Public Works Department (PWD) are progressing with work on the rehabilitation of the former mechanic shop at the St. Kitts Sugar Manufacturing Corporation (SSMC) compound at Kittsodart.

Once completed, the PWD’s Vehicle Maintenance Division will be relocated at the SSMC compound, paving the way for the start of construction on the East Line Bus Terminal at the division’s present location on Wellington Road.

During a tour of the work being done at the SSMC compound on Thursday(April 5), Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, who is also the Minister of Finance, recorded his satisfaction with the pace at which the capital projects for St. Kitts and Nevis, as outlined in the 2018 Budget Address, are being implemented.

“For 2018, the government budgeted and provided over EC$145 million to be expended on public infrastructure,” Dr. Harris said. “That includes this facility–the new compound for the Public Works [Department]; included in that sum was a provision for the construction and completion of the East bus terminal; included in that huge sum is the resurfacing project for the island main road; and of course included in that also are the infrastructural works to take place at Old Road.”

The prime minister said the 2018 figure represents the largest sum ever budgeted for capital expenditure in St. Kitts and Nevis, and noted that it is imperative that these projects are realized “for the benefit of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.”

On Friday, April 5, the Public Works Department will host a landmark ceremony for the official contract signing with small contractors for Special Capital Road Projects, which include the rehabilitation of the island main roads.

In this regard, Prime Minister Harris said, “The government then is delivering, delivering for all the people of St. Kitts and Nevis as we committed to do and we will continue on that vein, and we would want to thank the people for their support and for their wise decision in giving the Team Unity Government an opportunity to serve.”
