The Tourism Youth Congress affords students the opportunity to enhance their research and public speaking skills so they are equipped  to debate and voice opinions on various tourism-related topics.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism Carlene Henry- Morton said that it is important that students fully realize and appreciate that tourism has developed into an important influence in societal, governmental and educational circles as the Federation’s largest industrial sector.

“That is why the Ministry of Tourism has been working extremely hard at ensuring that children learn about Tourism. We have implemented initiatives such as the Tourism Education Programme which teaches primary and secondary school students and those pursuing Technical and Vocational Studies, about the destination and the tourism industry. For the tourism industry to enjoy longevity in our Federation, we have to engage the youth.” Mrs. Morton said.

Mrs. Morton further explained that the Tourism Youth Congress is aimed at increasing awareness of the tourism industry and allows students to think critically on how the industry can be further developed and sustained.

“With this increase in knowledge of the industry students will develop an appreciation of the importance of tourism to themselves and their country and it will open their eyes to the numerous rewarding and fulfilling career opportunities available to them,” Mrs. Morton said.

Sponsors for this year’s competition include: Boozies, Christophe Harbour, Marshall’s Restaurant, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Tourism, Ocean Terrace Inn, Serendipity, Shiggidy Shack, St.Kitts-Nevis and Anguilla National Bank, SKNIS, St. Kitts Tourism Authority, St.Kitts-Nevis Social Security and Timothy Beach Resort.
