BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, June 5, 2018 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – Less than a week ago, Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable stated during a nationally televised press conference that Opposition Leader, Dr. Denzil Douglas, and the St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) are out of sync with the popular sentiment of the people – a sentiment that is now being echoed by the ordinary citizens of the Federation.

The prime minister’s statement came in response to calls for his resignation during a poorly supported SKNLP-led protest march in Basseterre on Friday, May 25.

On Monday, June 4, a caller to the popular “Voices” radio programme on WINNFM 98.9 described the Opposition Leader as “a humiliation to everything that he touches” and noted that his continued leadership of the Labour Party “is an insult to our ancestors who have fought and many who have died defending the Labour Movement.”

The caller, identified as social and political activist Dr. Kuba Assegai, asserted that there is no comparison to be made between the leadership of Prime Minister Harris and that of the rejected leader.

Dr. Assegai heaped further praises on Dr. Harris, particularly for his performance as Minister of Agriculture, Lands and Housing under the former administration.

He added, “During that Labour Administration, I would tell you one thing, that is, that the greatest movement in that [administration] happened as the Minister of Housing, and that was [under] Timothy Harris. He performed a task second to none – nowhere in the world – in that he build houses for people who didn’t know anything about having a house with a toilet inside. He was brilliant and nobody can question that man on what he has performed for the people of St. Kitts-Nevis,”

Dr. Assegai said it is expected that Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, who is now in his third year as Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, will face hurdles and make mistakes, but stated that “he is learning as he goes along but we should be supporting him and giving him critical support as he moves along.”
