BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, June 14, 2018 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – After years of waiting, more than thirty-five families in St. Kitts have commenced the process of moving into their brand new homes.
This comes after the Team Unity Government, through the Unity Housing Solutions Programme, which is being administered by the National Housing Corporation (NHC), presented house keys to 37 new homeowners this week, with the latest presentation ceremony taking place today, Thursday, June 14, at Lavington in Saddlers Village.
During the three different presentation ceremonies this week, most recipients could not contain their excitement as they smiled, shook hands, hugged and expressed their profound gratitude to the government for helping them realize their dreams of finally becoming homeowners.
One such recipient was Mr. Claudius Gumbs who took to the podium at Wednesday’s ceremony at Stadium View, Sandy Point, where 15 of the 16 completed homes were distributed, to publicly express his thanks to the three-year old Team Unity Administration.
“Today (Wednesday, June 13) is an historic day for me because I now have my own “casa”, my own home that I call my casa,” an ecstatic Mr. Gumbs said.
“I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to the Honourable Prime Minister, the Team Unity Government and the People’s Action Movement and our leader of PAM, the Honourable Shawn Kenneth Richards,” Mr. Gumbs added, while also commending the work of the National Housing Corporation.
Another resident of Sandy Point, Mr. Glenville Mills, who presented each of the 15 homeowners at Stadium View with decorative plants for their new properties, also used Wednesday’s ceremony to speak of the good work of the government.
“Let me thank the Almighty God for a government that is doing extremely well, particularly in housing,” Mr. Mills stated, noting that Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, and the Cabinet could have chosen to invest the resources in other areas but instead decided to make property and homeownership a priority because “my prime minister, my blessed prime minister, is a man for the people, and [it is] not only the prime minister I want to thank, but I also want to thank the Deputy Prime Minister, the Honourable Shawn Richards, who is also the Parliamentary Representative for Constituency #5.”
The homes being built under the Unity Housing Solution Programme are larger in size and more durable than those constructed under the former administration.
It is anticipated that over the next 15 months, the government will complete the build out of the rest of the houses to get to the 300 homes it promised to build in its first term in office.
