On Tuesday, June 15, at a short but significant ceremony, Delta contributed to the education of young people in St. Kitts and Nevis as each primary and secondary school will receive EC$500 and each preschool will receive EC$250 from the company.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Honourable Shawn Richards, said that the gesture sends several messages to the students, schools and parents.

“You have a corporate citizen coming on board and saying to our students, is saying to our schools and our parents that we are proud of the fact that you are graduating, be it from preschool, primary school or secondary school. That kind of support, I think is important as it says to children that there are persons out there in the corporate community looking at you,” he said.

The minister added that it also sends a message that the corporate citizens are proud of the fact that the students are attaining an education.

“By you being able to attain an education of course you can be looked at as a potential employee, you can be looked at as citizens creating a better St. Kitts and Nevis that Delta Petroleum feels more confident of being able to operate in this type of economy, in this type of environment,” said the minister.

Delta is also giving back to the parents as some quite often lack the financial support to give to children through their years of schooling.

“The parents are receiving the ‘Go Extra Mile’ voucher for EC$15,” said the minister. “That EC$15 can be used to purchase LPG or purchasing diesel for your vehicle. So, if the parent does not have a vehicle, then of course most of us will utilize LPG for our stoves. It can be utilized by just about every single parent.”

Minister Richards said that parents will be thankful as they too will recognize that they have a corporate entity that is proud of the fact that they have given support to their children. The company is therefore rewarding them for staying the course and ensuring that their children have graduated.

Mr. Bevis Sylvester, who is the Regional Manager for Delta Petroleum Nevis Ltd. took the opportunity to express that the company believes in the community in which it serves.

“We believe that the youths are our future. We believe that if we support our youths there will be a brighter future for the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, but also a brighter future for Delta Petroleum in this community that we serve,” said Mr. Sylvester.

He added that gestures such as these will show the youth that the company is a good corporate citizen in St. Kitts and Nevis. Further, they will “support us in every way form and fashion that needs be to keep us here.”

This the third year that the company is providing monetary donations for schools.
