Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 09, 2018 (SKNIS): The sports developmental camp, hosted annually in Mid-July by the Department of Sports in St. Kitts, will not be held in 2018.
Over 200 children usually attend the camp to learn new techniques or fine tune their skills in various disciplines including football, cricket, netball, basketball, golf and swimming. However, a packed schedule of regional and international games being hosted this summer, and renovations at a number of sporting facilities, particularly Warner Park, have forced the cancellation of this year’s activity.
Director of the Department of Sports, Anthony Wiltshire, said that the staff regrets not being able to host the children for the one-week camp. This is due to the commitments required to stage the tournaments which include the ongoing OECS Under-23 Netball Championship, two One Day International cricket matches between the West Indies and Bangladesh at the end of July, the Under-14 Regional Football Competition slated for the first week of August, and matches for the Caribbean Premier League Twenty20 (CPLT20) tournament, also in August.
“We apologise,” Mr. Wiltshire said, expressing regret to parents and children. “We promise you that come next year, God’s willing, it [the camp] will be bigger; it will be better.”
