Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 30, 2018 (SKNIS): Official activities for St. Kitts and Nevis’ 35th Anniversary of Independence will intensify in September 2018, as the celebration continues under the theme “Love, Service, Patriotism and Pride, Independence 35”

At his monthly press conference on Thursday (August 30), Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris cited the extended calendar of events and the wave of national spirit that grips the twin-island Federation around this time period as Independence Day is commemorated annually on September 19. He strongly encouraged residents to participate fully in as many activities as possible, noting that “there is an event for everyone.”

“For my part, I look forward to the Prime Minister’s Independence Lecture Series on September 12, the unveiling of the statues at the National Heroes Park on September 17, and the traditional Independence Day Parade will take place on September 19. It is expected that this parade will be the largest and the best to date,” Dr. Harris stated.

There are also a number of religious events scheduled to take place including a National Day of Prayer and Fasting on September 03 and the Independence State Service on September 16 at the St. George’s Anglican Church.

“As we celebrate our 35th Anniversary of Independence, let us as a people reflect on our journey. Let us celebrate the accomplishments we secured along the way. Our path to Independence and our journey since that historic moment have been filled with challenges but crowned with triumphs,” said the prime minister. He also called for residents to “love each other like never before” adding that the promotion of good values is important.

Prime Minister Harris noted that the country’s motto: “Country Above Self” resonates with the members of his Cabinet, as they all diligently work to improve the lives of citizens and residents.

“I believe this is what we need throughout our communities – greater unity, and more love,” he stated. “We need more teamwork, greater cohesion, more love, more cooperation, more respect, a commitment to truth and right. Even more importantly, we need a greater commitment to our Heavenly Father. Fellow citizens and residents, if we increase and reinforce our commitment to securing these elements our nation would be an even better place.”

Dr Harris continued: “I therefore look forward to the celebration of the 35th Anniversary of Independence with great joy, with unwavering patriotism and commitment to service, and with deeply entrenched love and pride for our beloved country.”

The full programme of activities can be accessed in the photo section of the SKNIS Facebook Page.
