Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 17, 2018 (SKNIS): The St. George’s Anglican Church in Basseterre was filled with hundreds of citizens and residents on September 16, including the Federal Cabinet, government officials, members of the Opposition and members of the diplomatic and consular corps, who gathered in unity for the State Service of Prayer, Praise and Thanksgiving in Celebration of the 35th Anniversary of Independence of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.

The service featured scripture readings from Prime Minister, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris and Leader of the Opposition, the Right Honourable Dr. Denzil Douglas. The sermon was delivered by Bishop Charles Seaton, President and General Superintendent of the Methodist Church of the Americas, Leeward Islands Conference.

Some noteworthy attendees to the State Service included the Governor General, His Excellency Sir S.W. Tapley Seaton, Deputy Prime Minister, the Honourable Shawn Richards, Premier of Nevis, the Honourable Mark Brantley, the Honourable Eugene Hamilton, the Honourable Lindsay Grant, the Honourable Ian Patches Liburd, Senior Minister, the Honourable Vance Amory, the Honourable Senator Wendy Phipps, Cabinet Secretary, Josephine Huggins, and members of the Nevis Island Administration.

The congregation listened attentively to the lessons given from the scripture readings, was enchanted by the dance and choral performances, observed reverent silence for the moments of prayer and sang lustily throughout the service.
Bishop Seaton in his sermon said that the theme for this year: “Love, Service, Patriotism and Pride-Independence 35” is very fitting as it provides guiding principles and virtues for nationals and residents.

“I suspect that this theme was meant to summon more than just a special greeting or saying at this particular time in our nation’s life but more to heighten our awareness of our role and responsibility in nation building,” he said.
He also encouraged political leaders and the nation to put “country above self” and to work as a team for the betterment of the nation by eradicating political tribalism in all its forms.

“I earnestly wish my people that the love of our country would far exceed the service with which we offer with our lips and be clearly demonstrated in actions that are positive and uplifting,” he said.
