Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 25, 2018 (SKNIS): Youth groups, individuals, and other organizations are encouraged to be even more active this November as the island celebrates Youth Month 2018.

The annual observance offers an opportunity to facilitate and celebrate the dreams, aspirations, talents and energies of young people between the ages of 12 and 29 years. Some of the more popular activities organized by the Department of Youth Empowerment include a Youth March and Rally, High School Chef Competition, Island Bike Ride, and the 25 Most Remarkable Teens Awards.

While the dates for this year’s events have not yet been announced, Acting Director of the Department of Youth Empowerment, Pierre Liburd, said special attention should be paid to November 10 and 17 that are designated as Youth Service Days. On those days, persons, groups and organizations are strongly encouraged to carry out activities that benefit young persons in the community or engage young people in their planning and execution.

Mr. Liburd said some examples of activities include beach cleanups, community beautification initiatives, tree plantings, presenting gift baskets to the elderly, graffiti removals, and painting murals. Some of the less complicated projects can include cutting the lawn of senior citizens, fixing their gate or repairing their fence.

The acting director expressed high hopes that all youth, community residents, and organizations will start early preparations to execute one or more initiatives and added that the department is willing to partner with organizers to lend support where possible. Manpower will also be made available via the Volunteer Corps.

Additionally, youth groups are encouraged to register or update their registration with the Department of Youth Empowerment by October 01, 2018. Registered groups may have their projects included in the official Youth Month Calendar of Activities in November.

For more information visit the department located at The Cable Building on Cayon Street or telephone 467-1393 or 662-6054.
