SENATOR PHIPPS REFUTES FALSE REPORTS THAT INSULIN IS OUT OF STOCK IN THE FEDERATION

Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 04, 2018 (SKNIS): Minister of State with responsibility for Health, the Honourable Wendy Phipps, while speaking at the Prime Minister’s Press Conference on October 04 said that the Ministry of Health wishes to advise the general public that the public hospitals and pharmacies are adequately stocked with the usual insulin formulations.

She made this statement in response to inaccurate information being circulated in the media that insulin was out of stock and expired insulin was being dispensed in the country.

“An allegation like this is a serious one” she said, and noted that diabetes is a Chronic Non-Communicable Disease (NCD), which the ministry is committed in its fight against along with other illnesses. She also underscored that the insulin stock is not exhausted and that all persons with diabetes who are maintained on insulin are presently able to access usual treatment.

She also said that to date there is a total approximately 1133 registered diabetics across public health centres in the Federation and cautioned the public to get accurate information on serious matters such as this before taking it to the public to create panic.

“For any type of hysteria or bad information to be put out there relative to drugs that may be expired doesn’t grant the public any favours,” she said, while further adding that “persons calling into radio stations and using other forms of social media to get information out must be very accurate in terms of putting out information of this nature.”
