Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 19, 2018 (SKNIS): Having performed the best in Applied Mathematics Unit One (Statistical Analysis) for the CAPE 2018 Exams, Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC) Student, Vijhan Woodley, was the lucky recipient of a monetary contribution on October 19 from the Department of Statistics in St. Kitts.

This presentation came as a result of the department’s continued celebrations stemming from Caribbean Statistics Day, observed on October 15. The gesture is aimed at encouraging the recipient, as well as other students to continue to pursue statistics and excel in the field.

“One of the objectives is to heighten the interests of statistics to the public and to academic institutions and so as a department we decided as one of the celebrations for the week, we would recognize the student at CFBC who attained grade one on Applied Mathematics Unit One,” said Senior Director of the Department of Statistics in the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Gaile Gray-Phillip.

She explained that because Applied Mathematics Unit One looks at collecting and describing data, managing uncertainty, and analyzing and interpreting data, it was important to choose someone from that area of study.

“We were looking for somebody with grade one who demonstrates outstanding performance and we wanted a student who is continuing with Applied Mathematics and is currently enrolled in unit two,” she said. “Our aim is to encourage the students who are doing statistics and encourage other students to pursue statistics. In our department of course, we would want people who can do all of this: collect and describe data; management uncertainty; and analyze and interpret data because that is what we do. So we want persons who have some skill or knowledge of these concepts.”

Beverley Harris, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sustainable Development, congratulated Ms. Woodley for achieving grade one in all aspects of statistics and encouraged her to keep up the magnificent work. She also expressed her delight at seeing so many students undertaking statistics and encouraged them to continue.

Vice President for Financial and Administrative Affairs at CFBC, Jackie Ferracho Williams, thanked the staff of the Department for the gesture and congratulated Ms. Woodley for excelling in Mathematics.

“Your achievement is what we really look forward to…. So I hope for your second year that you will equally excel in Mathematics and other subjects that you are undertaking  and that goes for all of our students. In whatever area you are pursuing, we wish you all the best,” said the vice president.

She underscored the importance of the work of the statistics department in St. Kitts and Nevis, describing it as extremely important. She noted that CFBC will do its best “to ensure that the talent pool and resources that are required in terms of the human resources are trained and prepared to serve statistics  and by extension the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.”
