Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 19, 2018 (SKNIS): Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, while appearing on the ZIZ radio show “Frank and Candid” on November 16, made a public appeal to the beneficiaries of the Poverty Alleviation Programme to use the $500.00 monthly stipend wisely when they start receiving it next month.

“What we are asking is that those who are going to benefit from it [the programme], use it wisely. Do not squander it. We are providing them support, which is a good thing, and we hope that they would use it well,” stated Prime Minister Harris, while adding that the $500.00 monthly stipend should substantially help these households to keep up to date with their bills.

He said that the money should be used towards fixed expenses, such as electricity, water and mortgages, and not be squandered on frivolous things.

“We want to help people help themselves, but when we help you, do not abuse it,” he added.

Prime Minister Harris said that he is pleased to see the Poverty Alleviation Programme, which was listed in his Team Unity Administration’s Manifesto as an area of priority, come on stream next month. The Prime Minister added that he looks forward to it bringing financial relief to many families in the Federation.

“What we have attempted to do is what nobody in the world expected a small country like St. Kitts and Nevis would lead in doing. We are giving a major ‘top-up’ of $500.00 a month to every family whose [monthly] household income is under $3000.00. This is significant,” he said.
