The raffle was held as a new efforts to encourage members of the public to support the annual walk which is sponsored by the Insurance Company of the West Indies, ICWI, and organized by the Essence of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation.

During a brief but important ceremony, at their Bird Rock Road offices, Business Development Officer for ICWI, Nordia Dobbs, announced the lucky winner as Ayana Hanley.

Dobbs disclosed that Hanley had won 1 FREE Year of Third Party Insurance, and as a consequence has been declared the newest ICWI Road Angel.

The Road Angel Program was recently reintroduced by the company to help give more money to help women who have had the misfortune of being diagnosed with cancer. The initiative therefore sees ICWI donating 5% of every new Road Angel Policy to the Essence of Hope Foundation to help in its cause to fight cancer in St. Kitts & Nevis.

While accepting her prize, Hanley thanked ICWI for the investment it has been making to breast cancer, not only in St. Kitts, but also in other Caribbean countries. Hanley also made it clear that “It was indeed a pleasure being part of the Pink Walk and I am extremely happy that I finally did, because not only have I won the raffle but now I get the chance to support Breast Cancer and I am so happy to become a Road Angel.”

During what is dubbed, the Pink Walk, held on Saturday, 27th October, organizers introduced the raffle to the over 2,000 participants who made the early morning trek of approximately five miles.

Some said they were walking in honour of their mother, sister, wife and others who have been visited by the dreaded disease.

Breast Cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in Caribbean countries, like St. Kitts and Nevis and ICWI for the past three years has invested approximately $70,000 in supporting the foundation and its various initiatives to raise further awareness and to provide medical support to victims.

Hanley explained that over the years she had always shown an interest in the walk, but due to circumstances, had not been able to fulfill that promise. This year, however, due to the urgings of a close friend, she finally decided to participate and now, as she said, she has become an ICWI Road Angel.
