BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, November 20, 2018 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – The Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris has expressed sadness over the recent news of illness that has befallen the President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, His Excellency Brigadier David Granger.

President Granger traveled to Havana, Cuba on Tuesday, October 30, initially for a medical investigation, which he deemed necessary because of an unusual physical discomfort. Subsequent to a series of medical tests, the President was diagnosed as suffering from Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is described as a type of cancer that develops in the lymphatic system, which is a network of vessels and glands spread throughout the body.

In a letter to President Granger, Prime Minister Harris said, “I am deeply moved by the recent news of your illness and hospitalization in the Republic of Cuba. I wish, therefore, to convey on behalf of the Government and people of St. Kitts and Nevis, and indeed on my own behalf, best wishes for your speedy recovery.”

Prime Minister Harris further stated that, “We are mindful of the progressive agenda which you currently spearhead in your native Guyana. Your full recovery will therefore afford you the opportunity to continue on the path of poverty alleviation, economic and social development of your beloved country and, by extension, the wider region.”

With his highly specialized medical care and treatment for nearly three weeks and his positive response to the medical interventions and treatment, the medical team of Cuban specialists granted approval for President Granger to travel. As a result, the President departed Havana today, Tuesday, November 20, destined for his home country of Guyana.

A statement from the Embassy of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana in the Republic of Cuba stated that President Granger “may be required to return to Havana in a time prescribed by his medical team in order to examine and evaluate the progress of his recovery – and to extend his schedule of treatment.”
