Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 26, 2018 (SKNIS): As students at the Cotton Thomas Comprehensive School (CTCS) in Basseterre continue to live up to the school’s motto: “Soaring Beyond Expectations,” its principals and teachers are encouraging greater support from private companies, organizations and the general public.

The intention is to better integrate their students into the workforce so that they can not only become self-sufficient but also enjoy the many fruits of the burgeoning economy in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Maricia Vanlow-Beaton, a teacher at the school for the past 18 years, said that the CTCS has approximately 120 students between the ages of 5 and 18 years, with varying degrees of developmental challenges. The curriculum includes regular subjects such as Math and English, and also has a technical vocational component such as Carpentry, Sewing, Hairdressing, and Home Economics.

However, Mrs. Vanlow-Beaton said that the school is often overlooked by society. She attributes this to the stigma associated with being “a special school.” To reinforce her point, she cited the annual Christmas concert that is held at the grounds of the adjacent Dr. William Connor Primary School. The event has been held for more than 10 years, and while a number of tickets are sold every year most persons who purchase them do not take the time to show up to encourage the children on the day of the show.

“It is disheartening,” she said, noting that the children pour their hearts into the various performances to entertain a large audience.

Other school-organized events, such as sports day and CTCS open day, usually attract significantly lower numbers when compared to other public and private schools.

Mrs. Vanlow-Beaton said that she hopes to see more persons attending this year’s Christmas concert scheduled for Wednesday, December 05, 2018 at 6 pm.

She added that the school is also seeking partnerships with private companies, organizations and individuals willing to adopt the school. She noted that this would help to motivate the students and allow the school to expand the curriculum.

The Cotton Thomas Comprehensive School can be contacted at 466-0038.
