Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 27, 2018 (SKNIS): Citizens, residents and visitors alike, are being encouraged to play their part in ensuring that the 2018-2019 Carnival Season is safe and incident-free.

This was stressed by the Honourable Eugene Hamilton, who officially declared Sugar Mas 47 open on November 23, on behalf of the Minister of Culture, the Honourable Shawn Richards.

“I encourage all to be alert and vigilant, be careful. You do not want any unintended incidents or accidents that cause harm to anyone or any group. So, please be vigilant,” said Minister Hamilton. “We want a Carnival that is incident-free and accident-free, and I suggest, to those of you when you are fêting – keep your faculties in gear so that you don’t do things you will regret,” he added.

Minister Hamilton noted that fêtes such as Inception fête; Powder fête; Cooler fête; Wet and Flag fête to name a few, have “become an integral part of St. Kitts and Nevis’ Carnival and they have served to transform Sugar Mas into a more attractive tourism product.” He used the occasion to express thanks to one and all for “contributing to our cultural heritage and being part of what will become our Carnival legacy in the future”

The 2018-2019 Carnival Season officially began on Friday, November 23, 2018 and will run until Saturday, January 05. Some of the major highlights for the season include: J’ouvert on December 26; the National Carnival Queen Pageant on December 27; the National Senior Calypso Finals on December 29 and the Grand Carnival Parade on January 01.
