Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 15, 2019 (SKNIS): Over 200 young persons from St. Kitts and Nevis had the opportunity to gain a lesson on fiscal responsibility from the Minister of Human Settlement et al, the Honourable Eugene Hamilton, at the National Consultation on YOUth Forum that took place on February 14 at the Royal St. Kitts Hotel.

Minister Hamilton while responding to a question from the youth about housing, encouraged the youth to employ the practice of proper fiscal management and be thrifty with their earnings to acquire a home.

“People have choices and if you make the right choices, most of what you plan for your life, if not all, can be achieved,” he said, urging the youths to spend their money wisely. He also explained that when savings are put aside to purchase a home, it opens different avenues for home ownership.

“In the event you have to rely on what we offer in government through the National Housing Corporation (NHC), which is not the only avenue, one would think that you will begin to put aside something,” he said.

He asked the youth to think about things that they want to achieve in life and then advised them to think of the steps that will get them there.

“You have to save and put aside something to achieve what you want,” he said, noting that “homes are available to everyone who has the capacity to go to a financial institution or if you are in the category to be supported by NHC, but you must save regardless.”

The National Housing Corporation was designed to provide affordable quality homes through assisting the economically challenged with their housing needs to improve the socio-economic conditions of residents in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.
