Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 20, 2019 (SKNIS): Twenty-four (24) new island constables were sworn in at Government House on Monday, February 18, 2019 to ensure first and foremost that visitors to the country’s tourist attractions are kept safe. This is historic as they are the first island constables to be appointed specifically to tourism related areas.

Upon the administration of the oath and reception of instruments of appointment for the island constables, Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris underscored the importance of keeping the country’s visitors safe, especially at its tourist historical sites, while speaking at the Constituency # 9 Community Consultation held at the St. Paul’s Anglican Church Hall in Charlestown, Nevis, on February 18.

Prime Minister Harris said that key touristic sites including Port Zante, the St. George’s Anglican Church, Independence Square and Black Rocks in St. Kitts, as well as sites in Nevis, are all set to benefit from the added safety and security.

“We were doing it because we believe it was important to safeguard the gains that we have been making in the tourism industry where for the last couple of years we have been experiencing historic growth so that twice in a row in 2017 and again in 2018 we had over 1 million cruise and tourist arrivals in our Federation thanks to the Minister of Tourism, the Honourable Lindsay Grant,” said Dr. Harris.

The prime minister said that the government is working hard to deliver to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis. “Not only are we working hard, but there are results that are there to show and to support how impactful our work has been,” he said.

The Prime Minister was joined at the head table by Premier of Nevis, the Honourable Mark Brantley, Senior Minister, the Honourable Vance Amory, Attorney General, the Honourable Vincent Byron, the Honourable Lindsay Grant and the Honourable Eugene Hamilton.
