Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 26, 2019 (SKNIS): Four primary schools in St. Kitts went head-to-head to compete in this year’s History and Heritage Primary Schools Quiz Finals at the Anglican Church Hall on February 26. The competition showed off just how knowledgeable the youngsters were in the history, geography and culture of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Participating schools were the Tyrell Williams, Joshua Obadiah and Saddlers Primary Schools, and the George Moody Stuart School.

All schools performed well, but it was the Saddlers Primary School that took home the grand prize, the Sir Probyn Inniss Trophy.

Percival Hanley, Chairman of the History and Heritage Committee and General Manager of the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park Society, said that the teachers did an excellent job in preparing the children. He also encouraged the students to continue learning.

“Don’t just stick to the textbooks you have in school, learn about everything around you,” he said. “You saw how useful it can become when you are doing a quiz like this. So make sure you open your minds to everything, take note of everything around you and learn them.”

The official opening of History and Heritage Month, which is celebrated annually in the month of February, took place on January 31 at the Matheson House at Taylors Range. The month long calendar of activities, which was started by the late Sir Probyn Inniss, is being celebrated under the theme, “African Survivals in St. Kitts and Nevis.”

The History and Heritage Month features outreach activities held by various organizations including the Brimstone Hill National Park Society, Department of Culture and Ministry of Education, the Nevis Historical and Conservation Society, the St. Christopher National Trust and other partner agencies. The activities are designed to promote among citizens greater knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of the history, heritage and culture of the country, and to foster stronger national identities and pride.
