BASSETERRE, St. KITTS – May 21, 2019 – The St Christopher Air & Sea Ports Authority (SCASPA) has affirmed its commitment to improving the facilities at the RLB International Airport by entering phase II of the RLB International Airport’s rehabilitation project, which covers the resurfacing of Taxiway ‘A’ which has been out of operation for many years and a phased extension to include the resurfacing and reinforcement of the Apron. Phase I, which included the resurfacing of the Airport Runway and Taxiways ‘B’ and ‘C’, ended March 2019.

On completion of phase 2, the RLB Int’l Airport can boast of having a state-of-the-art superstructure which can facilitate the growing size of Aircrafts and increased Airplane traffic. To complement these improvements, SCASPA has installed a solar powered environmentally friendly runway lighting system and is very advanced with its plans to reconfigure the interior of the Airport’s terminal building to increase the passenger holding capacity, thereby improving the customer experience.

The upgrades at the RLB International Airport is just one element of a suite of capital projects that are currently being undertaken by SCASPA. The Port Zante Cruise Terminal would see the addition of a second cruise ship pier and development of the surrounding areas, which are well underway, with completion scheduled for September 2019. The Deepwater Cargo Port would also undergo much needed rehabilitation as major repairs would be done to the cope wall and bulkhead within the next three months. Additionally, the Basseterre Ferry Terminal received a much-needed upgrade with the construction of a terminal building outfitted with seating, air conditioning, information screens and additional security personnel to ensure the comfort and safety of ferry passengers.

Minister with responsibility for SCASPA, Honorable Ian “Patches” Liburd has given the assurance that these projects, like the numerous other capital projects that are currently being undertaken by his Ministry, would be completed before the end of 2019, in time for the hectic Christmas/Carnival season. SCASPA apologize for any inconvenience caused as a result of the improvements to the Airport and Seaports and solicit the kind understanding of its stakeholders. SCASPA, working harder to serve you better!
