The series started three months ago with well-known business persons including Dr. Thelma Brown who spoke about Entrepreneurship, Alex Straun on Growing Your Finances, Dr. Christine Walwyn on Customer Service and now Marketing with Avenice Thompson.

Mr. Delaney said that the sessions are called “meet ups” and are held once every third Thursday of each month.

He stated that the idea is to have someone with years of experience share their knowledge.

“We know that we can conduct these sessions, but we prefer persons who have hands on experience,” he said. “These are persons who have been in business or is in business and have successful businesses as well.”

Persons will not only have the benefit of hearing from the experienced business persons, but will be able to interact with them and other participants,” said Mr. Delaney.

“They will share their experiences and so on and then for the second hour or 45 minutes we have a mixer where persons will share synergies and collaborate and find strategic partnerships and share experiences with colleagues and ask questions relating to their personal business as well,” he said.

The senior officer said that May’s session was well attended as 35 persons participated. He added that it is expected that there will be repeat participants.

He said that the sessions are not only for persons who are in business, but aspiring entrepreneurs.

“We see the inclusion of the Advanced Vocational Education Centre’s (AVEC’s) business class, and we have had persons at the Skills Training Empowerment Programme (STEP).

Mr. Delaney noted the importance of the sessions.

“The importance is to build capacity for businesses and for first time business owners especially those who do not have a strategic plan,” he said. “So we intend to give them the basic business management skills to conduct business in an effective and in an efficient way. That way they can be more impactful and build more capacity as a business owner.”
