“The objective of the association is basically to create that sort of networking that allows capacity building, sharing of knowledge, building our communities, building out nation,” said the president. “Through coming together in unity, we think that that is the best way in moving forward to bring everybody on the same level and reach out to the communities, the private and public sectors and build a strong nation.”

Calvin James, Executive Director of SKNAPE, in adding to the objective said that it is also important to “advance the status of the engineering profession by the establishment and observance of high standards and conduct.”

SKNAPE also strives to safeguard the life, health and welfare of the public by restricting the practice of engineering to properly qualified persons; promote and foster the advancement of the engineering profession and science and encourage good relations between members of the profession; to protect and advance the interest of professional engineers.

The organization was established in 1980 and currently has a membership of about 80 qualified engineers. Mr. James said that SKNAPE is fully operational.

“We have evolved since, as we had a little dormant stage. This time, we are trying to get out of the trenches again. We have been doing quite a lot… trying to connect with some of our engineers. We hold meetings and we have also invited our colleagues from Nevis to participate in this association,” he said. “So SKNAPE is up and ready… and we are now in the process of getting our documentation through legislation.”
