Basseterre, St. Kitts (September 21, 2019) — Relations between the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, and the Republic of Kenya have been strengthened following the one-week visit to the Federation by Kenya’s non-resident High Commissioner, His Excellency Anthony Mwanĩki Mũchiri, during which time he presented his letters of Credence to the Governor General His Excellency Sir S.W. Tapley Seaton, GCMG, CVO, QC, JP.
High Commissioner Mũchiri, who is resident in Havana where he is Kenya’s Ambassador to the Republic of Cuba, arrived in St. Kitts and Nevis on Sunday September 15, and was among the dignitaries that joined in the observance of Heroes’ Day celebrations at National Heroes’ Park on Monday September 16. He presented his letters of Credence to the Governor General at Government House on Tuesday, September 17.
“Receive warm greetings from His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta,” High Commissioner Mũchiri told the Governor General. “The presentation of my letters of Credence marks the start of a journey that will create a new framework for engagement that will bring together Kenya and St. Kitts and Nevis in areas of trade, investment, infrastructure, health and financial services.”
According to the visiting diplomat, the Republic of Kenya and the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis have historically enjoyed warm and cordial bilateral relations which have continually been renewed through mutual and solid engagements in different multi-lateral fora and which culminated in the need to establish bilateral relations in September 2016.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries were formalised on September 22, 2016 when Foreign Affairs Minister Hon Mark Brantley exchanged diplomatic papers with the then Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Ms Amina Mohamed.
Ambassador Mũchiri is also accredited to Jamaica, Barbados, Cooperative Republic of Guyana, and the Dominican Republic. On his first trip to St. Kitts and Nevis, he was accompanied by his wife, Mrs Olive Mwanĩki, and Head of Chancery at the Embassy of the Republic of Kenya in Havana, Cuba, Mr Yabesh Monari.
“My presence today provides a clear focus on intended areas of engagement between our two countries of which I shall cement with different agencies of your government and the private sector in the course of my stay in your beautiful country,” High Commissioner Mũchiri informed the Governor General.
True to his word, High Commissioner Mũchiri in the afternoon of the same day met and held wide ranging talks with the President of the St. Kitts and Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Mr Faron Lawrence, on how the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis and the Republic of Kenya could cooperate in the areas of trade and commerce. The meeting which was also attended by the chamber’s Executive Director Mr Andrew Satney, and Head of Chancery at the Kenya Embassy in Cuba, Mr Yabesh Monari, was held at the Chamber’s office on Horfords Road in Fortlands, Basseterre.
