Basseterre, St. Kitts, 26th September, 2019 (SKNIS)—The Government of National Unity led by Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris received a rousing reception at a town hall meeting in the Bronx, New York, on September 26.

Several hundreds of Kittitians and Nevisians living in New York packed the town hall to listen to the prosperity agenda of the government that has many citizens and residents singing the praises of the tremendous progress of the country made in less than five years.

Prime Minister Harris, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Premier of Nevis, the Honourable Mark Brantley, Minister of Public Infrastructure, Urban Development and Posts, the Honourable Ian Patches Liburd, Attorney General the Honourable Vincent Byron, and St. Kitts and Nevis’ Ambassador to the United Nations, His Excellency Sam Condor, spoke to the blossoming development taking place in the twin-island Federation brought about by the progressive and prudent policies of the government.

Some of the areas broached were the reduction in criminal activity, especially the decrease in homicides through the government’s gang intervention and rehabilitation programme; significant legislations such as the Motion of No Confidence Bill that was recently passed to strengthen democracy and to prevent Motions of No Confidence laying in abeyance for 26 months, such as what happened under the Douglas-led Administration; the Office of Tenure of Prime Minister, which is soon to come to Parliament for debate was also discussed by Prime Minister Harris as a bill to prevent the possibilities of creeping abuses of power for holding prime ministerial office for too long; and Electoral Reform was also debated, while past abuses of the Electoral System were decried by many citizens in attendance.

Other matters that were presented included the growing diplomatic footprint of St. Kitts and Nevis and its improved relationship with several countries including Canada and the African continent; scholarship opportunities to boost the human resource power in the Federation; and several infrastructural projects, including a second cruise pier, that will improve the socio-economic standing of Kittitians and Nevisians.

Prime Minister Harris, Honourable Mark Brantley and His Excellency Sam Condor are in New York for the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. Prime Minister Harris will address the Assembly on Friday September 27 between 12:30 and 1:00pm.
