Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 31, 2021 (SKNIS): Citizens and residents are reminded of and encouraged to adhere to the nightly curfew that was implemented on May 25 for two weeks in the first instance to ensure that everyone is protected from the threat of the Novel Coronavirus.

“From 11 p.m. nightly until 5 a.m. the following day until June 08 all persons are required to be at their residence unless special permission is granted by virtue of your employment as an essential worker or for medical or other emergencies or unless, of course, you receive permission in writing from the Commissioner of Police,” said Superintendent of Police, Cromwell Henry, during the May 28 edition of the NEOC COVID-19 Press Briefing.

Superintendent Henry warned that persons who are permitted to be on the road during curfew hours should not misuse their passes.

“Those persons who have received electronic curfew passes are reminded that these passes should only be used in the course of your duties and should not be abused. Any abuse of the privilege will result in the revocation of the passes and possible arrest and prosecution,” he said. “Similarly, persons found away from their residence during the curfew time without permission run the risk of being arrested. Regulation five of the regulations provides for severe penalties for breaches.”

He reminded persons that under the regulations anyone who contravenes or fails to comply with the regulations shall on summary conviction be liable to a fine not exceeding $5000 or to a term of imprisonment not exceeding six months or both.

Superintendent Henry reminded bar operators that during the hours of operation they are to adhere to all health and safety protocols outlined in the regulations, as well as appealed to them to close in time to allow workers and patrons to arrive at their residence before the curfew begins.

He solicited the “fullest cooperation” of the general public “as we work together to ensure that we get through this period safely.”
