Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 02, 2021 (SKNIS): The Government of National Unity continues to provide homes to the indigent and vulnerable. The most recent example of this was the handing-over ceremony on July 1, 2021, of a brand new home to Ms. Carleen Richardson, a resident of Tabernacle Village.

The brief but significant ceremony, which was facilitated through the Department of Community Development and Social Services, had in attendance Prime Minister and Constituency Representative for Number 7, which includes Tabernacle, Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris; the Hon. Wendy Phipps, who was the Minister Responsible for Community Development and Social Services at the time of conception of the initiative; and Deputy Director of the Department of Community Development and Social Services, Mrs. Ann Wigley.

“So I remember that we would have come here and almost to the point of tears we would have seen the condition that your family would have been living under and it was not easy to take in. We could not fathom how someone could have managed to live like that but at the same time we respected what you were trying to do in terms of putting a roof over your head, but at the same time we recognized it was less than what you deserved so as a result, we would have made a decision for public health reasons to demolish the structure that you would have had,” said Minister Phipps.

Carleen’s son, Ezekiel Richardson, who spoke eloquently, said that he never lost hope of being provided with a better place to live although he endured being bullied by others about the impoverished conditions in which they lived.

“The Lord and the prime minister have provided a light at the end of the tunnel for us, me and my family,” he said.

In speaking to the family, Prime Minister Harris said: “We have come with much love in our heart for ‘Miss Jimmy’ and Carleen and for all the good people who have worked to ensure that ‘Miss Jimmy’ could move from where she was opposite there in a setting of just galvanize to now a modern infrastructure. To see what was then and what is now, you can understand the metaphor when Ann Wigley says this is a five-star hotel.”
