Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 03, 2021 (SKNIS): Maintaining a physical distance of three to six feet has been identified as a key measure to protect against contracting the COVID-19 virus. The advice from health officials is especially important in St. Kitts and Nevis, as most of the confirmed cases show no signs of illness.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Hazel Laws spoke about this at the September 01, COVID-19 Briefing by the National Emergency Operations Centre.

“It’s important to note that [the] majority of the cases were asymptomatic – no symptoms at all,” she stated.

A pie chart illustrated that 45.3 percent of the positive cases had no symptoms, while 35.7 were symptomatic, while there were no data for 18.8 percent of cases.

“The most common symptoms being reported include headache, an altered sense of smell and taste, joint pains, dry cough, and a few complained of gastrointestinal symptoms – nausea, vomiting, watery stool,” CMO Laws stated.
Health authorities are currently monitoring 502 active cases.

Dr. Laws strongly encouraged individuals to remain vigilant against complacency which, is likely fueling the third wave of the virus within the twin-island Federation. She said the best tool to prevent infection is to get fully vaccinated. All individuals must also abide by the non-pharmaceutical measures of wearing a facemask when in public, maintaining physical distancing, frequently sanitizing hands and high touched surfaces, boosting their immune system, exercising regularly, and getting a minimum of six hours rest.
