Basseterre: St. Kitts, Tuesday, October 19th, 2021: The Home Economics Department at the Washington Archibald High School (WAHS), under the leadership of Ms. Roline Taylor, has embarked on a Week of Awareness aimed at sensitizing the student body of the school on three internationally recognized activities celebrated in the month of October.

The Week of Awareness conducted under the theme: “Show you care, be aware, eat local, support the fighters and respect the elderly” effectively represented the international activities under focus. The activities are: International Day of the Elderly, which was celebrated on October 01; World Food Day celebrated on October 16 and Breast Cancer Awareness, which is celebrated during the entire month of October.

Ms. Roline Taylor expressed why the focus was placed on those days.

“We choose to do the Week of Awareness because we want to bring attention to these three activities that are held during the month of October. We recognized that, while we were teaching our students, this will be fitting as sometimes we teach about caring for the elderly; in Food and Nutrition, we also look at different types of diseases, and cancer is one that sometimes comes up,” noted Ms. Taylor. “World Food Day, we are trying to promote local eating among our students.”

The Week of Awareness activities planned by the WAHS Home Economics department kicked off with a door decorating competition between the teachers in the department. Other activities include presentation of fruit baskets to the elderly in the school’s district; informational sessions with students about breast cancer; promotion of healthy eating, and discussions on how to provide care to the elderly.

Ms. Taylor explained why the door decorating competition only involved teachers.

“We did it amongst the teachers because it was short notice and we want the teachers also to be involved,” she noted.

Ms. Taylor expressed thanks to the teachers in her department for their collaborative efforts and dedication, which ensured the week’s success.
