BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, December 01, 2021 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris has extended heartfelt congratulations to the Government and people of Barbados “for making the leap forward and attaining Republic status on this your 55th Anniversary of Independence.”

Prime Minister Harris expressed these words of commendation in a letter to his colleague Prime Minister of Barbados, the Honourable Mia Mottley Q.C.

Dr. Harris said, “During these uncertain times – with the protracted pandemic, increased inflation and shifting socio-economic circumstances – it is heartwarming to witness not just Barbadians, but the whole region looking forward to a new journey, a new hope for tomorrow, a new Republic.”

The honourable prime minister further noted that, “Celebrations such as these are a time to reflect on the groundwork laid before by the forefathers who fought to end slavery, those who fought for adult suffrage, and those who fought for Independence. It proves that a firm foundation can provide the footing for the impenetrable structure needed to truly build a nation.”

During an extravagant ceremony that commenced on Monday, November 29, but ended on Tuesday, November 30, Independence Day, Barbados completed its transition to become the world’s newest Republic, officially removing Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state.

Dame Sandra Mason was sworn in as the country’s first president.

Dr. Harris ended his letter to Prime Minister Mottley by saying, “May God continue to bless you, your Government, and people as you chart your new course in governance.”   -30-
