Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 27, 2022 (SKNIS): Approximately 40 health professionals in St. Kitts and Nevis successfully completed a six-week training geared towards further equipping them with the relevant knowledge and skills needed to execute their duties efficiently and effectively.

“Today, we gather to celebrate with about 40 Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and Nursing Attendants and their family and friends after a period of training to develop knowledge and skills to perform the role they desired within the healthcare system,” said Danielle Wiggins, Nurse Manager at the Joseph Nathaniel France (JNF) General Hospital, while delivering welcome remarks at the Graduation ceremony on Thursday, May 26. “For about six weeks, healthcare personnel and other professionals shared the knowledge and skills necessary to ensure that you understand the jargon used and that you are adequately equipped to function as EMTs and Nursing Attendants.”

Nurse Manager Wiggins said that EMTs are tasked with responding quickly to medical emergencies and, if needed, transport patients to the hospital.

“EMTs, you will care for the sick or injured in emergency settings which can be at home or on the street or following disasters or mass casualty incidents. The lines of our citizens and visitors will often depend on your quick reaction and competent care as you respond to emergency calls, perform certain medical procedures and transport patients to hospitals or other healthcare facilities in accordance with established protocols and guidelines,” said Mrs. Wiggins.

On the other hand, Mrs. Wiggins noted that Nursing Attendants are responsible for meeting patients’ basic needs.

“Nursing Attendants, you will perform basic nursing techniques and direct patient care activities according to established nursing principles and standards under the supervision of a registered nurse,” she said. “We trust that as you embark on this new venture you will enhance the quality of emergency services and patient care that not only the healthcare sector provides to our people, but the collaboration with other services… as they too, improve the quality of service they provide.”

Nurse Manager Wiggins reminded the EMTs and Nursing Attendants that healthcare is a labour-intensive effort. She encouraged them to do great work, love what they do and provide quality care to everyone they serve.
