Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 25, 2022 (SKNIS): Three of the eleven students awarded scholarships to pursue undergraduate university studies in the Republic of China (Taiwan) received strong words of encouragement and a fond farewell from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, the Honourable Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, at the RLB International Airport in Basseterre prior to their departure for the East-Asian country on Wednesday (August 24, 2022).

Dr. Hanley visited with the students, Hakim Blackmoore, Everton Liburd and Rasarles Nisbett as they waited to board the aircraft marking the start of a new journey in their lives.

Mr. Blackmoore will study Journalism and Mass Communication at Ming Chuan University, Mr. Liburd will study Mechanical Engineering at Kian Shian University, while Mr. Nisbett pursues studies in Computer Science and Information Engineering at the National Dong Hwa University.

The trio are going to separate universities, however, they were reminded by Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Hanley that as nationals of St. Kitts and Nevis, they all have a responsibility to represent the twin-island Federation with great pride. They were also encouraged to capitalize on the many opportunities that will come along during their years of study in Taiwan and to use these opportunities to positively impact their lives and the lives of others whom they encounter.

Mr. Nisbett said that it was “heartwarming to see that he cares about us taking time out of his busy schedule as the education minister to come and see us off. That was a great morale booster.”

Mr. Liburd agreed and said that Dr. Hanley’s “words of motivation positively impacted us.”

Mr. Blackmoore said that he was excited to begin this new chapter in his life in Taiwan. “I will represent my country by doing good, and when I come back, I will contribute to the upward movement of media in St. Kitts and Nevis.”
