A successful Environment Month of Activities

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Tuesday, July 2, 2024 – The Department of Environment concluded its Environment Month of Activities on Saturday 29 June 2024, with Music Festival Goes Green. That involved an eco-friendly promotional video, highlighting the progress that the Federation has made on its journey towards environmental conservation and sustainability. The Month of Activities, strategically held in June, extended the globally recognized Environment Day into one month, with hopes of expanding this year’s environment day theme of Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience.

The month of activities was geared towards advancing public awareness on climatic issues, plastic waste reduction, strategies being implemented to mitigate environmental challenges, and the importance of engaging the public and stakeholders on the topic of climate change.

Informative and thrilling activities included media tours, No Plastic Bag Mondays, public-private environment-themed Family Feud, and a reforestation activity executed by the Forestry Unit.

Director of the Department of Environment, Derionne Edmeade, said that the month of activities was not only an opportunity to connect and improve community relations but also to encourage an eco-friendly mindset. He emphasized that community support and participation in the Department’s mission was paramount.

He stated, “Citizens are the main stakeholders and should be aware of the workings and actions of the Department as it relates to environment preservation and island sustainability. This is essential in making informed decisions, providing robust legislative support, encourage an eco-friendly transition and influence behaviour change.”

The Department is preparing for the first of three phases to ban, import, sell and distribute specific single-use plastic from 31 December 2024.
