St. Kitts and Nevis, July 26, 2024 (SKNBS): The St. Kitts and Nevis Bureau of Standards (SKNBS), in collaboration with the Trinidad and Tobago Bureau of Standards (TTBS), hosted a week-long training on Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for agroprocessors. The training took place from July 22 to 26, 2024, at the Ministry of Agriculture Conference Room.

St. Kitts and Nevis (SKN) boasts a vibrant food manufacturing sector that plays a pivotal role in the country’s economy and sustenance of its people. However, there is a growing recognition of the need to enhance the standards and certifications associated with food processing and agriculture to align with food security and reduce food imports.

The SKNBS is the national standards body responsible for setting and upholding standards across various sectors, including agroprocessing. To address the unique challenges and opportunities in the local context, the SKNBS has initiated a strategic project aimed at establishing a robust certification arm.

The rationale for the project includes expanding agricultural exports by conforming to international standards, building consumer trust and supporting the local economy, strengthening the competitiveness of the agricultural sector, and reducing reliance on imported food products by empowering local farmers and producers.
Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) are essential for ensuring food safety. They support the implementation of HACCP (Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points) and Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS) by managing overall hygiene and environmental conditions in
food facilities.

By understanding and implementing the guidelines provided in the training, attendees will be equipped to develop and maintain effective GMP programs. This training ultimately empowers individuals to minimize the risk of food contamination and enhance food safety.
