BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, August 13, 2024 (SKNIS): Following comprehensive briefing and assessment reports provided to Acting Prime Minister, the Honourable Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, and Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Marcus Natta, the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) was officially deactivated as of 8:30 PM on Tuesday, August 13, 2024. This decision was made as Tropical Storm Ernesto moved away from St. Kitts and Nevis, significantly reducing the threat to the islands.

Emergency crews have been diligently working to clear roads and secure downed power lines, ensuring the safety and accessibility of affected areas. As a result of these efforts, an all-clear has been issued, allowing for the resumption of regular operations across the Federation.

Acting Prime Minister Dr. Hanley expressed deep gratitude for the collective efforts during the storm.

“I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you for the role you played during the passage of Tropical Storm Ernesto. From our emergency responders and utility workers to the residents who heeded the warnings and took the necessary precautions, your cooperation and resilience have been invaluable,” said Dr. Hanley.

The Acting Prime Minister also praised the dedication of the emergency teams and the effectiveness of the coordinated response.

“Our nation has once again demonstrated its strength and unity in the face of adversity. I am proud of the way we came together as a community to ensure the safety and well-being of all,” he added.

While conditions have improved, residents are still urged to exercise caution when venturing outside. There may still be lingering hazards such as debris or unstable ground in certain areas, and it is important to remain vigilant.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) extends its gratitude to the public for their cooperation during this period and assures continued monitoring of the situation. Further updates will be provided if necessary.
