Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 21, 2024 (SKNIS): Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew, is set to convene a crucial meeting with community leaders, social clubs, and non-governmental groups this Friday, August 23, 2024. This meeting marks the beginning of a multipronged approach to addressing the growing concerns of violence and crime in St. Kitts and Nevis, framing them as critical public health issues.

The meeting, which will bring together a broad cross-section of society, is a preliminary engagement aimed at setting the stage for a national consultation and a 90-day campaign focused on citizen security. Dr. Drew emphasized that this effort will require the involvement and cooperation of all stakeholders, including representatives from church and religious institutions, political parties, sports associations, social clubs, private sector businesses, government technocrats, and other community-based organizations.

“The challenge of violence and crime in our Federation is not just a law enforcement issue; it is a public health crisis that affects every facet of our society,” said Prime Minister Dr. Drew. “We must adopt a whole-of-society approach to combat these issues, and that starts with ensuring that every voice is heard in the planning process. This is not just a government initiative; it is a national effort, and we must all be part of the solution.”

The meeting on August 23rd will serve as a platform for stakeholders to share their suggestions and insights, which will be instrumental in guiding the focus and success of the upcoming national consultation and campaign. Prime Minister Dr. Drew is committed to engaging leaders of all registered political parties and other key groups in this effort, ensuring that the response to violence and crime is inclusive and comprehensive.

As the government works to foster a safer environment for all citizens and residents, Dr. Drew reiterated the importance of collaboration and partnerships in achieving this goal.

“Citizen Security is paramount to our nation’s well-being,” he added. “Together, we can and must create a safer and more secure St. Kitts and Nevis for every resident,” said Dr. Drew.

The 90-day campaign and National Consultation is conceptualised to include a series of initiatives and actions designed to address the root causes of violence and promote long-term peace and security in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.
