St. Kitts and Nevis, September 06, 2024 (SKNBS): The St. Kitts and Nevis Bureau of Standards (SKNBS) is on the verge of acquiring cutting-edge RT-PCR equipment, a move that will significantly enhance its testing capabilities.

RT-PCR, or Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction, is an advanced technology used to amplify and analyse DNA, providing critical insights in various fields including gene expression, mutation detection, and pathogen identification.

Once in place, the RT-PCR machine will enable the SKNBS to perform a range of essential tasks, including the detection and quantification of pathogens, monitoring microbial degradation, identifying species, and assessing food safety by detecting allergens and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). This new acquisition will allow the Bureau to offer a more comprehensive suite of microbial tests for food and water, improving accuracy and turnaround times.

The introduction of this technology represents a major leap forward for St. Kitts and Nevis, allowing the country to independently test food for authenticity, microbial content, and potential adulterations. This enhancement to the nation’s food safety infrastructure will reduce reliance on external testing and strengthen public health protections across the island.
