CHARLESTOWN, Nevis, 30 September 2024 – The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, through the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment, Climate Action and Constituency Empowerment, concluded a three-day workshop from 23-25 September 2024 at Nevis Red Cross, aimed at developing a framework for tracking the country’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) actions. Following that training, a Stakeholder Validation Workshop was held on Thursday 26 September 2024 with both activities being supported by the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT).

This is a significant step towards strengthening St Kitts and Nevis’ ability to monitor and report on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly in the electricity generation and transport subsectors. Additionally, the workshop aimed to build local capacity to project GHG emissions and ensure that sustainable NDC tracking is one step further for the government to align its climate goals with international standards.

The workshops, that implemented blended, theoretical learning with hands-on activities, were

facilitated by Benise Joseph and Ahyana Bowen of the Caribbean Cooperative MRV Hub (CCMRVH) and Matej Gasperic of the Greenhouse Gas Management Institute (GHGMI) focused on familiarizing participants with key NDC tracking concepts, including Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) reporting requirements, data collection and compilation, tools for Biennial Transparency Report (BTR) preparation, and methodologies for projecting GHG emissions.

Project Coordinator Phynora Ible lauded the event as “very successful” by highlighting the active engagement and constructive feedback during the validation workshop.

“The stakeholder validation workshop was a crucial step in refining our approach to NDC tracking,” Ible said. “The feedback we received will help ensure that our framework for tracking and projecting GHG emissions is both accurate and practical for future reporting. With the successful completion of these workshops, St. Kitts and Nevis is poised to strengthen its commitment to climate action, ensuring greater transparency in NDC tracking while building the capacity needed for long-term sustainability.”

The validation workshop provided stakeholders with the opportunity to review and clarify methodologies for developing GHG emissions projections in the energy sector. This feedback will be instrumental in finalizing the framework, ensuring that it meets both national and international standards for climate action reporting.
