BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – November 15, 2024 (PMO) – Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance
Drew, and elected representative for Constituency #8, has revealed details of a comprehensive
development plan aimed at revitalizing the town of Cayon, addressing years of neglect and restoring
its status as a vibrant community and town.
In a recent interview on Freedom FM’s ‘Issues’ program, Prime Minister Drew expressed deep
concern over the systematic downgrading of Cayon by previous administrations. He highlighted the
removal of essential institutions, including the post office and healthcare facilities, which has
adversely affected the town’s socio-economic fabric. “Cayon has been abandoned for too long. My
government is committed to restoring it as a vibrant town with the infrastructure and respect it
deserves,” stated Dr. Drew.
The development plan, according to the Prime Minister encompasses several key initiatives:
Infrastructure Development: The government plans to refurbish the community center,
transforming it into a hub for social and cultural activities. Investments in healthcare infrastructure
are also prioritized to ensure residents have access to quality medical services within their
community.
Economic Revitalization: Efforts are underway to attract financial institutions to Cayon, providing
essential banking services and supporting local businesses. This move aims to stimulate economic
growth and create employment opportunities for residents.
Environmental Sustainability: In line with global environmental goals, Cayon is to be declared a
landfill-free zone. The government is promoting sustainable waste management practices, including
recycling programs and public education campaigns, to preserve the town’s natural beauty and
health.
These initiatives are part of the government’s broader strategy to ensure that all communities in St.
Kitts and Nevis receive equitable attention and resources. By focusing on infrastructure, economic
development, and environmental sustainability, the administration aims to create a balanced and
inclusive growth model.
Prime Minister Drew emphasized the importance of community involvement in the successful
implementation of these projects. “We are not just building structures; we are building a community.
The people of Cayon are at the heart of this transformation, and their active participation is crucial”.
The government has already initiated consultations with local stakeholders to tailor the development
projects to the specific needs and aspirations of Cayon’s residents. These consultations are expected
to continue throughout the planning and implementation phases to ensure transparency and
community ownership.
This comprehensive plan reflects the government’s dedication to correcting past oversights and
fostering a prosperous future for Cayon. By addressing critical areas such as infrastructure,
economy, and environment, the administration aims to restore Cayon’s status and improve the
quality of life for its residents.
