Hon. Shawn Richards Retracts Baseless Claims Made Against Government Ministers

Basseterre, St. Kitts – December 19, 2024, (PMO) – During today’s sitting of the
National Assembly, the Deputy Speaker of the House, Senator Latoya Jones, firmly upheld
parliamentary standards by addressing and resolving unfounded allegations made by
Opposition Member Hon. Shawn Richards, representative for St. Christopher Five.
Hon. Richards alleged that government ministers were using public resources to fuel
private vehicles. However, when asked to provide factual evidence to support his claims,
Hon. Richards was unable to do so. The Deputy Speaker requested that the allegations be
retracted to maintain the integrity of the House and prevent the dissemination of
misinformation.

“Honorable Member for St. Christopher Five, if you do not have proof of your statement, I
need you to retract it,” Senator Jones stated. Following repeated requests for evidence,
Hon. Richards ultimately conceded, retracting the baseless allegations.
The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis remains committed to transparency, accountability,
and the highest standards of governance. The insinuation that government ministers
engage in improper use of public resources, including fueling personal vehicles at
government expense, is wholly inaccurate and unsubstantiated.

The government categorically denies these claims and views them as a distraction from
the constructive work being done to advance the nation.
Deputy Speaker Jones’ leadership during the session ensured order and protected the
integrity of parliamentary proceedings. She emphasized that all members must uphold
their responsibility to present facts and refrain from using the platform to spread unfounded
allegations.

The government encourages robust debate and accountability but underscores the
importance of evidence-based discourse. Attempts to tarnish the reputation of government
officials without proof do a disservice to the democratic process and the people of St. Kitts
and Nevis.

The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis reiterates its dedication to serving the people with
transparency, efficiency, and fairness. Efforts remain focused on the Sustainable Island
State Agenda and delivering measurable improvements across all sectors for the benefit of
all citizens.
