Basseterre, St. Kitts, January 14th, 2025 (PMO)– Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance
Drew has reassured the public that St. Kitts and Nevis face no immediate threat from the
human metapneumovirus outbreak reported in China. During a recent interview, Dr. Drew
cited updates from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), which indicated that
the current situation does not present significant risks to the Federation.
“The Chief Medical Officer, working in close collaboration with PAHO, has confirmed that
the outbreak in China remains within expected parameters and poses no immediate threat
to St. Kitts and Nevis at this time. Nevertheless, we remain vigilant, proactive, and
prepared to respond should circumstances evolve,” Dr. Drew stated.

Dr. Drew underscored his administration’s commitment to safeguarding public health,
highlighting the ongoing modernization of the healthcare system. Recent initiatives have
included investments in infrastructure, advanced medical technology, and enhanced
emergency response capabilities. “Our healthcare modernization efforts are designed to
ensure that St. Kitts and Nevis is prepared to address any public health challenges that
may arise, whether they are domestic or global in nature,” Dr. Drew emphasized.

The Prime Minister called on citizens and residents to rely on official government updates
and PAHO communications for accurate and timely information, urging them to avoid
unnecessary alarm caused by unverified reports circulating on social media. “The
dissemination of accurate information is crucial in maintaining public trust and confidence.
I encourage everyone to stay informed through reliable sources and to act responsibly.”
As part of the government’s preparedness strategy, the Ministry of Health continues to
monitor international developments closely, maintaining open lines of communication with
regional and global health organizations. The Prime Minister also highlighted the
importance of the Federation’s partnerships with PAHO and other health agencies, which
provide access to critical data, resources, and technical expertise.
“St. Kitts and Nevis has benefited greatly from our collaborations with PAHO, which has
been an invaluable partner in helping us build a resilient healthcare system. These
relationships allow us to respond swiftly and effectively to potential threats, ensuring the
safety and well-being of our people.”

Dr. Drew also stressed the importance of individual responsibility in maintaining public
health. He encouraged citizens and residents to continue practicing good hygiene, staying
up to date with vaccinations, and seeking medical advice if they experience symptoms of
respiratory illness. “Our collective vigilance and adherence to public health guidelines are
key to keeping our nation safe,” he said.
While no immediate action is required in response to the metapneumovirus, the
government remains committed to providing updates should the situation change.
