A Lantern Switch-on ceremony was held to officially light up the lantern on Wednesday, February 12. At the ceremony, Saint Kitts and Nevis Ambassador to Taiwan, His Excellency Donya L. Francis explained that it was especially significant to capture our folklore in this lantern display because the students from Saint Kitts and Nevis are known for putting on captivating, lively and engaging masquerade and clown performances.

“Everyone who witnesses our cultural performances are left captivated and it is a source of pride when the students can showcase such unique, cultural expressions on a variety of stages across Taiwan,” said Ambassador Francis.

Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Chia Lung Lin participated in the ceremony by switching on the lantern alongside His Excellency Donya L. Francis, Deputy Director General of the Taiwan Tourism Administration, Dr. Hsin-Jen Lin, Lantern Teacher, Mr. Wen Chuan Huang and Saint Kitts and Nevis student and cultural ambassador Kevrone Phipps.

During the ceremony, Mr. Huang was presented with a gift for his dedication to capturing the essence of Saint Kitts and Nevis when making lanterns for the Embassy over the years.

The Taiwan Tourism Administration Deputy Director General, Dr. Hsin-Jen Lin presented Ambassador Francis with a plaque of appreciation for continued participation in this annual event.

Ms. Jacinth Hunkins opened the ceremony with a steel pan rendition. Other nationals studying in Taiwan participated in the ceremony adorned in cultural wear and costumes.
