Basseterre, St. Kitts 18 February 2025 – The Department of Environment successfully concluded its six-day “Good Refrigeration Practices” training workshop on Saturday 15 February, 2025. Held at the Avec Compound, the program equipped 22 local technicians with essential skills to adopt sustainable refrigeration and air-conditioning (RAC) practices, aligning with the Federation’s Sustainable Island State Agenda and the Montreal Protocol’s HCFC Phase-Out Management Plan.

The workshop, which ran from 10th-15th February, focused on minimizing the use of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) and transitioning to environmentally friendly alternatives. Participants engaged in a blend of theoretical lessons and hands-on practical experiences, covering topics such as safe equipment handling, regular maintenance, and effective recovery strategies. Mrs Kolene Latham, the National Ozone Coordinator, emphasized the importance of understanding the harmful impacts of ODS on the ozone layer, public health, and the sustainability of our planet.

“Workshops like this are critical to building technical capacity and fostering a culture of sustainability,” said Mrs Latham. “By equipping our technicians with the right knowledge and skills, we are taking concrete steps toward environmental protection and climate change mitigation. And we have done that today” she added.

Upon the conclusion of the training session held on Saturday, participants engaged in a practical examination. Certificates of participation will be awarded to those who successfully passed the assessment. This certification not only validates their expertise but also enhances the quality of services within the RAC sector, contributing to a healthier ozone layer and a more sustainable future for the Federation.

This workshop underscores the country’s commitment to achieving its sustainability goals. By reducing reliance on harmful refrigerants and promoting eco-friendly alternatives. The program supports both national and international efforts to combat climate change and protect the environment.

The Department of Environment will continue to monitor and support the implementation of sustainable refrigeration practices, ensuring that the knowledge gained from this workshop translates into tangible actions.
