BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, February 27, 2025 (SKNIS) – The modernization of the 40-year-old government quarry took a significant step forward this past weekend with the addition of several essential pieces of equipment, including a secondary crusher, a crusher screen, and a RokBak truck. A primary crusher was previously acquired and commissioned in August 2024.

Once fully operational, Minister of Public Infrastructure, the Honourable Konris Maynard, stated that these upgrades will significantly enhance production at the quarry to meet the increasing demand for materials.

“With these additions, the quarry’s output is set to increase by over 300 percent, and so the quarry will now be able to produce more product more efficiently,” Minister Maynard stated during the Thursday, February 27, 2025, sitting of the National Assembly.

The minister highlighted that these upgrades will have a transformative impact on the construction industry, where several projects are already underway, with more set to begin soon.

Among the key projects mentioned are the ongoing roadworks in Shadwell, Boyd’s View, Palmetto Point, Newton Ground, St. Paul’s, and the St. Peter’s Main Road. Additionally, construction continues on the MRI facility, the two-million-gallon-per-day desalination plant, and the upcoming Sir Joseph N. France Health Network Multi-Specialty Hospital.

Minister Maynard emphasized that “The substantial improvement in production capacity at the quarry will not only ensure the timely delivery of materials for future infrastructure projects, but it will also reduce construction costs, enhance efficiency, and support the continued growth and development of our nation.”

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving national infrastructure, creating jobs, and strengthening the economy, stating that “this upgrade to the quarry is a vital step in achieving those goals.”
