Dr. Douglas emphasized that while the United States has its own policies regarding Cuba, St. Kitts and Nevis, as a sovereign nation, continues to engage with its international partners based on mutual respect and national interests. He reaffirmed that the Federation has long enjoyed a strong and cooperative relationship with Cuba, particularly in the areas of education, healthcare, and technical training.

“The relationship between St. Kitts and Nevis and Cuba has always been one of mutual respect and development. We have received significant support from Cuba in areas such as medical training, scholarships, and healthcare services. It is a relationship that has benefitted our people tremendously.”

When asked about the Federation’s stance on international restrictions and geopolitical alignments, Dr. Douglas was clear that St. Kitts and Nevis operates on principles of sovereignty and diplomacy. “We believe in constructive engagement. Our country has a right to determine its own foreign policy, and we will continue to do what is best for our citizens while maintaining good relations with all nations,” he said.

The Foreign Minister also addressed concerns about the implications of regional and international pressures on small island states like St. Kitts and Nevis. He noted that while global politics often influence diplomatic relations, the government remains focused on policies that promote peace, cooperation, and sustainable development.

“We are committed to strengthening our relationships with all our international partners in a manner that respects sovereignty and promotes mutual growth,” Dr. Douglas stated. “Our position remains one of fairness, dialogue, and collaboration.”

Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew has also emphasized the government’s commitment to principled diplomacy, ensuring that St. Kitts and Nevis continues to uphold international standards while forging partnerships that advance the nation’s development goals.

As discussions on foreign policy and diplomatic engagements evolve, the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis assures its people that it will remain steadfast in safeguarding the country’s interests while maintaining its longstanding commitment to regional and international cooperation.
