The Marketing Unit of the Department of Agriculture, St. Kitts, has issued its preliminary summer forecast for locally grown produce, providing stakeholders with an early outlook of what will be available during the peak agricultural months of June and July 2025.
In a statement released to farmers, vendors, wholesalers, and other key partners, the Unit expressed gratitude for their continued support and collaboration, which plays a vital role in ensuring national food security and strengthening the local economy.
The forecast highlights a diverse selection of fresh produce across several key categories. Among the fruits expected to be available are plantains, green bananas, mangoes, papayas, watermelons, cantaloupes, honeydew melons, and pineapples. Leafy greens and herbs will include lettuce, cabbage, thyme, scallion, and other fresh herbs.
For vegetables, the local market can anticipate a steady supply of tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet peppers, seasoning peppers, and eggplant. Root crops such as carrots, sweet potatoes, and onions are also forecasted to be available. In the category of vine crops, pumpkin and squash are expected, while grains and other produce will include locally grown corn.
The Department is encouraging all stakeholders to maximize the use of fresh, local produce by prioritizing domestic sourcing and reducing imports where feasible. This, the statement notes, will support a more sustainable and resilient agricultural sector while ensuring that consumers benefit from the freshness and quality of home-grown food.
