Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 23, 2025 (PMO) — Minister of Public Infrastructure Hon. Konris Maynard has announced that the Basseterre desalination plant is now approximately 90% complete, signaling the nearing end of a transformative project aimed at securing water resilience for thousands of residents.
“We’re probably closer to about 90% by now. We are moving very, very well,” Minister Maynard stated during the July 22 Prime Minister’s Cabinet Wide press conference.

The plant is designed to produce 2 million gallons of clean water per day, which will benefit residents in Basseterre, Frigate Bay, St. Peter’s, and surrounding areas. Minister Maynard praised the work of developers Royal Utilities and Gemini Engineering for their efficiency and professionalism.
“In a few weeks’ time, we will be ready to turn on the switch. This is significant… not only will it address shortfalls in Basseterre, but also help the St. Peter’s situation,” he emphasized.
The project also includes extensive infrastructure works, such as new underground pipelines already laid to connect to the main 2-million-gallon storage tank at Morne Peak.
Additionally, Minister Maynard announced that an island-wide aquifer mapping survey has been completed, and new well-drilling is expected to begin shortly to support other regions of the island.
“We anticipate that over the next six months to a year, we will be doing significant drilling around the remainder of the country,” he confirmed.
The Basseterre desalination plant represents one of the most ambitious water security initiatives in national history, marking a significant milestone under the government’s Sustainable Island State Agenda.
