Basseterre, St. Kitts & Nevis – August 15, 2025 – The St. Kitts and Nevis National Emergency  Management Agency (NEMA) and the St. Kitts Meteorological Services are, today, confirming that  Tropical Storm Erin has strengthened into the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season.  As of 11:00 AM AST, Hurricane Erin was located approximately 460 miles east of the Northern  Leeward Islands, moving west-northwest at 18 mph with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph.

The formation of a hurricane in such proximity to the Federation serves as a critical reminder of the  unpredictable and dynamic nature of weather systems during the peak of the hurricane season.  Current forecasts indicate that the core of Hurricane Erin is expected to pass near or north of the  Leeward Islands on Saturday.

While St. Kitts and Nevis may not experience direct impacts from the storm’s core, residents are  advised to remain prepared for potential tropical storm conditions. Possible rainfall accumulation for  the forecast period is up to 50.8mm or 2 inches. Sea waves will range from 1.2 to 2.1 metres or 4 to  7 feet and a High Surf Advisory will go into effect by tonight.

The National Disaster Coordinator (NDC), Livingston Pemberton, issued a brief message to the  public, stressing the importance of preparedness.

“I want to reassure the public that there is currently no hurricane watch or warning in effect for St.  Kitts and Nevis,” Mr. Pemberton stated. “However, the proximity of this system to our islands  underscores the importance of staying vigilant. I urge all residents to take this time to review and  update their disaster preparedness plans, and to ensure their emergency kits are fully stocked. The  best way to protect our families and communities is to be prepared and stay informed.”

NEMA and the St. Kitts Meteorological Services will continue to closely monitor the progress of  Hurricane Erin and will provide the public with timely updates through all official communication  channels. Residents are encouraged to follow NEMA on social media and listen to local news for the  latest information. Individuals can also join NEMA’s Broadcast list by sending a message to (869)  466-5100 which is also used as the WhatsApp number.
